February 11th Weekly E-votional

I know, I know. How can it be called a weekly e-votional when I haven’t been very good about writing weekly lately?  Between the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday, annual meetings, board meetings, officer training, and all sorts of other things, my e-votionals have just been kind of swept under the rug.  Like all habits, the longer you go without doing it, the easier it is to get out of the habit of doing it.  The opposite side of this is that the more you participate in a habit, the easier it is to keep doing it.  This is true of spiritual practices, as well.

Lent is a great time to begin a new spiritual practice.  Usually the practices associated with Lent are almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.  We usually talk about fasting, about what we are giving up.  I am giving up chocolate.  I am giving up caffeine.  I am giving up Facebook.  Please understand these are examples only, now what I, personally, am giving up!

I have long thought that it is better to add a spiritual practice than to give something up. “Give up” an half hour a day to read scripture or pray.  “Give up” a television show each evening to spend Bible study with the family.  “Give up” some money and perform a random act of kindness each day.  The pope proposed that we give up being indifferent to our neighbors.  Pastor and author Mike Slaughter said it more bluntly, “give up being a jerk”.

Whatever you do, don’t do it to become more healthy or become a better person.  If you give something up or add something, do it so that you grow closer to God.  Lent is a time of reflection, transformation, and preparation for the events of crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.  What better time to add a new spiritual practice?

January 14th Weekly E-votional

Last week in worship, we celebrated Epiphany.  Epiphany  is the day that we celebrate the Magi arriving to find the Christ child.  As most of us remember, the Magi followed a star until they found Christ.  We don’t know how many Magi there was, we don’t know when they arrived (anytime after birth to two years after the birth).  We do know that they journeyed, following that star, gave gifts, and then returned home.

As part of worship, everyone was given a star word.  If you weren’t there, these were small stars with different words on it.  The idea behind this was to give you a “star” to follow as we enter into 2016, a “star” to guide you.  The reactions were interesting as people looked at their words and thought about them.  If you were not here last Sunday and would like a star word, there are some in a basket on the sign-up table in the narthex.  No, you may not switch yours out if you didn’t like it!  If you do not make it to church regularly, leave a comment and we will let you know what your star word is!

My word is “serenity” and it is already making a difference.  The very next day I had a meeting that ran longer than I expected.  I was in a hurry to get home because I knew dinner was ready and it was past Hannah’s dinner time.  Traffic was bad, especially where Laurel-Bowie Rd goes down to one lane.  Then I got stuck in the one lane behind someone going 15 MPH under the speed limit.  This is one of those instances that typically drive me crazy!  However, I took a deep breath and thought “serenity”.  Then I prayed for serenity and it worked.  I have faced several similar scenarios to different extents and they were met with various levels of success (hint – toddler tantrums and pizza places forgetting the order for seeds – not as serene as I would hope!)  However, I can tell that it is making a difference and it is only the first week.  I truly hope I continue to pursue “serenity” throughout the year.  I can’t wait to hear how your star words have affected you!

Matthew 2:9b-11:  “they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 ”
