September 22nd News and Notes

Congregational Meeting

Chris has answered the call to serve Northwood Presbyterian Church as their pastor.  His last Sunday at UPB will be September 25th.  We will have a brief congregational meeting following worship on the 25th for the dissolution of the pastoral relationship.

Gap Pastor

The board has come to agreement with Dean McDonald to become our gap pastor as we search for an interim.  Dean will be with us from September 26th through the end of the year.  Dean’s husband, Jim, filled in while Chris was on sabbatical and Dean provided pulpit supply for us this past summer.  Come, welcome Dean on October 2nd.

Mission and Service needs

Please remember the Mission and Service Committee is always collecting food for the Bowie Food Pantry.
This month their greatest need is Spaghetti, tuna, low sugar cereals, canned beans and fruit.

They will again be collecting only gift cards for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This allows the families to do their own personal shopping.
Our committee will begin collecting those cards in October.

Power Point Help

The board is in process of lining up people to help out with the power point for worship.  If you are able to help or have any questions, please contact Cathie Lambert.

Buddy Program

The Children, Youth and Family Committee is looking for adult volunteers to be buddies to the children in our church family by checking in on them once or twice a month with a card or note.   We hope this will build and strengthen relationships between our children and adults.   With all the challenges our kids are dealing with, we think it is more important now than before that our children know we love them, are there for them, and they are an important part of our church family.

Buddies will be assigned for 3 months:  October-December, January-March, and April-June.  The number of buddies each adult has will be determined by the number of participating adults and kids.  As Chris mentioned on September 4, the buddy program helped to increase the sense of community during COVID.   We can only imagine what it will do now, as we start to get back to some sense of normal.

If you are interested in being a buddy, please let Sue Kennedy know by Tuesday, September 20.   In addition, if you have any questions or concerns, talk to Sue.   suepiano49@gmail.com

Junior High help wanted

The CYF committee is exploring creating a group for 6-8 graders who have aged out of SEEDS. If you are interested in helping out with this ministry, please contact Sue Kennedy.

Board Corner – Special Edition, September

It is important to the Board that our congregation is kept informed on discussions that are
taking place and decisions that are being made for the good of the United Parish of Bowie.
Minutes of the board meetings, along with agendas, monthly financial statements and the
pastors report, are kept in a binder in the church library.
In the past few months, the Board has been at work in several different areas including:

• Art and Music camp was held in July and was deemed a success

• Listening sessions have begun to follow up on the CAT survey results while looking to the
future of the church. A few sessions remain for anyone who hasn’t attended one yet.
• Three children were baptized into the church in the past few weeks
• Pastor Chris has resigned his position at UPB and it was decided his last Sunday on the
pulpit will be September 25th
• Board has had Zoom calls with representatives from both Presbytery and UCC to find out
next steps for UPB in search for a new called pastor
• Dr. Dean McDonald has agreed to be the Gap pastor for UPB and will cover the pulpit until
the end of the year with a start date of September 26th

• Board working on updating UPB website
• Diane Eades has decided to step down as Vice Moderator of the Board as of October 2,
2022 due to personal reasons but will remain on the board. Sue Kennedy has volunteered to
take over the Vice Moderator of the Board position for the rest of the year.
