March 31st News and Notes

Easter Baskets

The Mission and Service Committee is accepting Easter Baskets this year for their families in need.  We will provide the baskets.

If the congregation could please bring candy, pencils, puzzles, books, etc to fill the baskets, that would be greatly appreciated.
We’ll also be collecting gift cards to help out the adults as they shop for Easter.  This Sunday is the deadline for items for the Easter Baskets.

Holy Week

This year, we will be celebrating Maundy Thursday and Good Friday with Village Baptist Church.  Both churches will coordinate services with Maundy Thursday being at Village Baptist and Good Friday being at UPB.  Services will be at 7:00 each night.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Children, Youth, and Family Committee is collecting individually wrapped candy to fill 300-400 Easter eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt, which will be after worship on Palm Sunday.   We are going to start filling  the eggs the week of April 4 so candy will be needed by Sunday, April 3.  Any candy you can provide will be very much appreciated and can be left  in the CE room on the table with the sign for Easter Egg Hunt.

Christmas in April
Christmas In April will be held this year at United Parish of Bowie on Saturday April 30th. There are many projects both inside and outside that can be addressed that day. The formal Christmas in April for PG County that we customarily participate in is being held this year but they are limiting the numbers and only conducting outside projects on the chosen residences. This was not a good fit for us so addressing the needs at UPB will give Members an opportunity to contribute their volunteer time closer to home. It is hoped that the PG program will return to normal by next year and we can resume our customary participation with them. In the meantime mark you calendars and start thinking of items you think should be added to the “to do list” for the 30th. Sign-ups and more info will be coming at a later time.

Lenten Bible Study

During Lent, we will have a Monday night Bible study. We will be looking at the witnesses to the crucifixion.  You can join us here.

Mars Hill

We are currently in conversation with Shadyside Presbyterian Church to see if our Mars Hill mission trip will happen this summer! This is a mission trip to Mars Hill, NC.  People 12 years and older go and rehabilitate homes during the week.  Some adults stay on campus and lead a children ministry for our children 11 and under.  Volunteers can do either! The mission trip will take place July 10-16. If you are interested or would like more information, please let Chris know!

Board Corner

It is important to the Board that our congregation is kept informed on discussions that are taking place and decisions that are being made for the good of the United Parish of Bowie.  Minutes of Board meetings, along with agendas, monthly financial statements, and the pastor’s report, are kept in a binder in the church library.

In the past few months, the Board has been at work in several different areas including:

  • The budget was presented to the congregation on Sunday January 23rd, it was approved.  A deficit is projected for this year.  If we have any issues, our reserve fund will cover it.
  • We nominated Doug Snyder for the Seabury Celebration of Service (UCC).
  • The Board approved to continue serving communion on the first Sunday of each month as well as Maundy Thursday.
  • The yearly ZimZam mission donation of $2,500 was again approved for 2022 which comes from the Carl Bickel Fund. This is the second year donating.
  • Diane is still working out the logistics for getting a new outdoor digital sign.
  • The board has approved the use of the Congregation Assessment Tool or CAT. The CAT is a customizable assessment instrument that can help you as a leader measure the level of satisfaction and energy in the congregation you lead. Sue Kennedy will be our contact person.
  • LeQuan Turner will start an internship with UPB
  • Sue Kennedy and Cathie Lambert volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee as Board representatives.
  • There will be no Lenten dinners this year due to COVID restrictions.
  • We will have joint worship with Village Baptist Church during Holy Week.
  • The financial status is moving along smoothly.
  • Jan Barbato volunteered and was approved to be our new board secretary for 2022.  Diane Eades was nominated and approved as the new vice-moderator for 2022 Board.  Cathie Lambert volunteered and was approved to continue as treasurer for 2022.
  • Erma has agreed to continue as a representative of UPB at UCC.  Linda Rawlings will represent UPB at Presbytery.
  • The following board members agreed to serve as liaisons for the following committees:
    • Membership and Fellowship – Jan Barbato
    • Mission and Service – Judy Farrell
    • Children, Youth and Family – Sue Kennedy
    • Stewardship and Finance – Cathie Lambert
    • Communication – Cathie Lambert
    • Christian Spiritual Formation – Diane Eades

The Board is meant to represent the membership of the United Parish.  Please feel free to contact any Board member or Pastor Chris with your ideas, suggestions and/or concerns.  Board members for 2022 are Sue Kennedy, Jan Barbato, Cathie Lambert, Sherita Williams-Smith, Linda Rawlings, Judy Farrell and Diane Eades.

In Person Worship

We have returned to in person worship. The previous Covid protocols are in place. Masks are required, we are limiting our singing to three hymns, we will not pass the peace, and social distancing is recommended.

One change is that  Pastor Chris will take a rapid Covid test within 24 hours of each service. If it is negative, he will not wear a mask or face shield while speaking from the pulpit. He will put on a mask while singing. If it is positive, worship will transition to virtual for that Sunday only. If you see him wearing a face shield, it does not mean that he tested positive, but that he did not have a test available to take.

We will still livestream through our YouTube channel.
