AUGUST 25TH News and Notes

Help for Haiti

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, earlier this month has shattered the country, with at least 2,189 people dead and approximately 1.5 million people with few resources left to fend for themselves. The survivors lack medical assistance, shelter, running water and food. Compounding their plight are the flooding and mudslides resulting from Tropical Storm Grace and the violent gangs that have been intimidating the convoys with equipment and supplies attempting to bring relief to the residents.

During the offering, we will have a special collection for Haiti. If you’d like to contribute, add “Haiti” in the memo line and place your offering in the wicker baskets.

If you’d like to donate directly, here are several different organizations that are working on the ground to help:

  1. U.C.C. Disaster Relief Fund –
  2. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance –
  3. Church World Service –
  4. World Vision –
  5. CARE –
  6. Save the Children –
  7. Mercy Corps –

Backpack/School Supply Drive
The Mission and Service Committee would like to thank the  congregation for the overwhelming response to the backpack/school supply drive. We ended up with 14 back packs and at least 10 bags of school supplies. The Bowie Food Pantry decided they would pack the bags according to grade levels.

Covid Protocols

The board reviews the Covid protocols every month.  Beginning this Sunday, we will have hymnals available again.  They will be on a cart as you enter the sanctuary and ask that you be sure to return them after worship.

The following protocols are still in place:

  • If you are not feeling well or have come into contact someone who has tested positive for Covid that you stay home and join us via livestream.
  • We are not printing bulletins.  They will be sent out Saturday evening and Sunday morning.  You can print them or use the screens.
  • Masks will be required of everyone regardless of vaccination status.
  • We will have hand sanitizer available at the door.
  • We will not pass the peace or pass the collection plate.
  • We will not have coffee before worship or chat & chew after worship for the time being.
  • We will be limiting singing to two hymns, as well as the offertory.

Worship Livestream

Now that our worship is back in the sanctuary, we are also livestreaming every Sunday on our YouTube channel –

If you are unable to join us in person, but would like to continue to make your tithe or offering, there are several ways to do so.  You can mail a check to the church.  You can give online through paypal   You can also set up a payment through your banks online bill pay feature.  Paypal charges the church approximately 3%, so please consider either consider giving through one of the other two ways or adding 3% to your offering to offset the fee.
