December 12th Advent Devotional

Lost Your Joyful Song?

John Dobbs

Isaiah 44:1-23

At this time of year we long expectantly for the promises of our faithful God. Our hearts are filled with songs of hope, peace, joy, and love! God assures us of His strong love that is our strength.

While our souls long for a joyful song, it is not always there. The painful reality is that Advent can seem distant. I don’t know what weights you carry this Advent season. Could it be that some of the things that have stolen your soul’s joyful song are of your own creation?

Sometimes we’ve lost our song of joy because we have sought comfort from sources other than God. Isaiah reminds us that the gods we create on our own cannot give us true joy, only disappointment and weariness. Joy can be a distant memory.

Is there any hope? Does God have any love remaining for us? Yes! Hear His blessed words, “I will not forget you. I have swept away your offenses…Return to me.”

In this season of reflection and expectation, let us return to God who gives us a joyful song for our soul. He gives us such a glorious song that the skies, mountains, and forests join in! In this Advent season, find your joyful song in God alone. He loves you so much.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the joy you give – even when I have wandered away. May the welcome you offer me as I come home to your love spark joy throughout this Advent season. Amen.
