November 14th E-votional

If the inter-google is to be believed.  It seems yesterday was National Kindness Day.  People were encouraged to dress like Mr. Rogers and wear cardigans.  Some of you know of my love of Mr. Rogers and how he lived a faith that we should all aspire to.  He was an ordained Presbyterian pastor and his ministry was through television.  He preached the message of Christ by living it out and showing love and, yes, kindness.  Whether he was inviting his black mailman to soak his feet in the kiddie pool with him at a time when public pools were still segregated or he was describing feeding what he was doing while feeding his fish because a blind girl wrote to him, concerned the fish weren’t being fed, he embodied love and kindness.

However, I did not celebrate National Kindness Day.  First, I don’t own a cardigan.  But more importantly, why should we have just one day to be kind?  Shouldn’t we show kindness in love every day?  That is the problem with all these “national days.”  Do I need a special day to show my love of tacos or to where socks with sandals or talk like a pirate?  I would argue if you love tacos, eat them anytime you want.  If you want to wear socks with sandals, you be you.  If you want to talk like a pirate, than shiver your timbers  to your heart’s delight!  If you want to be kind, then please be kind.  Don’t go out of your way on one day to be kind, but be kind every day!

Yes, there are times we will be tired, frustrated, and short with people, but that doesn’t mean we can’t strive to show kindness?  Wouldn’t that be the true way to honor Mr. Rogers?  Didn’t Jesus tell us the greatest commandment was to love God and a second like it is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves?

It is kind of like worship.  Yes we gather for corporate worship on Sunday, and that is a very important aspect of our walk with Christ.  However, if we limit ourselves to one day of worship a week, we are doing ourselves and God a disservice.  We should worship God every day through our prayer, our praise, and the way we live our lives.  We should strive for everything we do to be an act of worship.  Will we sometimes, maybe oftentimes, fall short?  Absolutely.  Fortunately,we worship a God of grace and that makes it worth the effort to worship the Lord day in and day out!

Psalm 100:2 “Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing.”
