“How are things going?” “Crazy, busy, life has been like a circus!” How many times have we described something like a circus. Whether it be our job, what’s going on in Washington, or what has been going on in our lives. If it has been especially busy, we say life is like a three ring circus. There is just so much going on! Surely it isn’t just me, surely we have all been there when life gets busy. And isn’t life always busy? I feel like 75% of being an adult is saying “if I can get through this month, things will slow down.”
Except it isn’t quite right. I don’t think it is correct to say that life is like a three ring circus. I think life, especially when it is busy, is more like a carnival. When I was little, I used to get the idea of the circus and the idea of a carnival mixed up. There is one important distinction that I would like to lift up. A three ring circus has a ringmaster, pointing your attention. The ringmaster points your attention to the center ring where the lion tamer is or the far ring where the clowns are.
Carnivals have barkers. Each attraction has it’s own barker trying to gain your attention. “Step right up and try your strength.” “Come and see the bearded lady!” “Pop three balloons and get a prize!” “Hot funnel cakes!” Many different barkers all competing for your attention, trying to entice you. Doesn’t that sound a little bit more like life?
So what barkers are competing for your time and attention? Who is calling you? Power? Wealth? Sports? Politics? Relationships? Pleasure? Possessions? What about Christ? Which voice are your following? Which call will you answer?
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
