September 26th News and Notes

Mars Hill fundraiser

We will be hosting a fundraiser for next year’s Mars Hill mission trip at Texas Roadhouse on October 9th.  If you bring in a flyer (which will be sent out as soon as we get them), UPB will receive 10% of the proceeds from your meal.  We will have a raffle there to win four tickets to see the Washington Redskins vs the Carolina Panthers on October 14th! It is also kid’s night, so there will be face painting and balloon twisting.  Tell a friend and come out and eat for a great cause!

You can also order a Texas Roadhouse gift card (available in $15, $25, $50, $75).  They can be used at any Texas Roadhouse and never expire.  10% of the gift card goes to the mission trip.  You can double dip.  If you buy a gift card and use it on the 9th, 10% of the gift card AND 10% of the meal will go towards the mission trip.  To get the cards in time for the meal, they have to be ordered by this Sunday.

Love Does

Our book study on the book “Love Does” by Bob Goff meets Monday nights at 7:00 this fall until October 15th.  You do not have to have read the book and each session is independent, so if you miss a class you will not be lost the next week.  Join us next Monday!

Seeds

Seeds started back last night.  We had 15 children come and learn about Noah and the rainbow!  If you would like to help provide the meal for Seeds, please sign up here!

Mission Giving

We will collect our mission offering today.  Our mission partner for September is Ardmore.  “Ardmore is an established non-profit in Bowie that has been supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1963. Our mission of promoting empowerment, choice and voice is acted out daily in the lives of the 200+ people who participate in our customized employment, community learning, and community living programs. Historically people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have denied the option to live where and with whom they want or to choose their job, leisure activity, or education. We believe that each person, regardless of disability, has the ability to have control over their life. Recognizing that our jobs, our families, and our neighborhoods are all enriched by the communities that we build with eat other, Ardmore strives to break down barriers to community for the people we support while empowering them to live the life of their choosing.”

United Campus Ministry

Rev. Holly Ulm of the United Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland has reached out to us for help.  First, she asked for prayers for the students and they move in and return to campus.  They are also looking for someone who is willing to serve on the board of UCM.

Finally, they are looking for assistance with their L3: Listen, Learn, Lead program.  The idea behind this program is to have students interview people of faith to tell their “call” stories to be posted on the UCM website to be available to students on an ongoing basis.  They are interested in how the work of the Spirit let people to the work of their life, either professionally and/or living out their faith in the way of Jesus Christ?

This will help students to network and find role models in the fields they are interested in so another dimension is to try to connect students who are exploring various professions/life callings with local church members engaged in the students’ areas of interest.
AYoung people are in search of hope in these challenging times.  To hear how older people of faith have made it through many “toils and snares” is a true blessing and often inspiration for young people’s journeys.
This project is designed to make faith real and relevant to college-aged young people.
