November 16th E-votional

One question we should constantly be asking ourselves is “how is the church fulfilling it’s mission?”  At the most recent meeting of the Parish Board, we talked about one way the church fulfills it’s mission, the monthly “One Great Hour of Sharing” offering.  “One Great Hour of Sharing” is a good program, but it supports mission in a vague, distant, way, that most of us can’t relate to.  The board decided that to better affect how we fulfill the mission of the church, we are changing our monthly offering to “Mission Giving.”  In some ways, we have done this, previously.  We have designated the offering to go towards disaster relief, the Mars Hill mission trip, or Cure SMA for example.

The idea behind switching from One Great Hour of Sharing to mission giving is to both provide flexibility in the missions we support and to have a bigger impact on missions in our area.  We will invite organizations to come and give a “minute for mission” on the first Sunday of the month and have the mission offering go towards that program.  On December 3rd, we will have representatives from Shaw Community Center come and talk about what their organization does and the mission giving on that day will go to their organization.

This is a great way for our congregation to be more involved.  Hopefully, by having our mission giving be more local and more tangible, it will increase our involvement.  Almost as importantly, if you have a mission that you are passionate about, talk to me or a board member and we will see about having them be our designated mission giving for a month!  Any month that we do not have a designated mission, the mission giving will go to One Great Hour of Sharing as our default.

2 Corinthians 9:10 “The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.”
