August 25th Weekly E-votionals

Something you may not know about me is that I am a dog person.  I am a sucker for dogs, especially puppies!  I have to be supervised anytime we go anywhere that dogs are being adopted. That’s why a recent story that came across my Facebook feed about a veterinarian in Georgia grabbed my attention.

Dr. Andy Mathis works in Elberton, Ga.  Graycie was a stray that was brought into him.  He thought she would probably have to be put down, she was severely underweight and in a lot of pain.  She was terrified of people and wouldn’t eat.  There was a video of Dr. Mathis getting in the kennel with Graycie.  He had put his breakfast into a bowl just like hers.  He started eating his breakfast and then put her bowl in front of her.  Because he was there with her, modeling what he expected her to do, and encouraging her, she began to eat.  In time, Graycie gained weight and became a happy, healthy dog.

I think this is a great analogy for God’s love for us as shown in Jesus Christ.  God knew what we needed to live an abundant life.  God could tell us over and over again, but we just wouldn’t listen.  Just as Dr. Mathis got into Graycie’s kennel, through the incarnation of Christ, God became human and came into our world.  Just as Dr. Mathis knew the best way to reach Graycie was to be present with her and meet her where she was, Christ is Immanuel, “God with us” and comes to us wherever we may find ourselves.

That is why we follow Christ.  In Christ, God’s love became human.  In Christ, God dwelled with us to show us a better way.  In Christ, God gives us abundant life.

John 1:14  “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.”

August 18th E-votional

There have been some great stories to come out of the Olympics.  Some stories are about amazing feats of athleticism (hello, Michael Phelps and Simone Biles), some just make you shake your head (I’m looking at you Ryan Lochte).  I don’t think you will find a more inspirational story than what happened this past Tuesday.

In the middle of the women’s 5000 meter (or 5K), everyone was still close together.  The pack seemed to move as one.  Then tragedy struck.  Abbey D’Agostino, of the United States, and Nikki Hamblin, of New Zealand, collided.  It appeared to be slight at first, but it caused them both to go to the ground.  In a sport where seconds can make a difference, D’Agnostino got up and then helped Hamblin up.  They tentatively started running together, encouraging each other.  D’Agnostino was obviously injured (she had a torn ACL and meniscus) and stumbled.  This time Hamblin helped her up and stayed with her until it was clear that D’Agnostino was steady on her feet.

Both women finished the race.  They were the last two to finish, but the care they showed each other in picking one another up will be a memory many will not soon forget.  For me, this is a big part of what it means to be part of a faith family.  We are able to lean on Christ and we are able to lean on our brothers and sisters in Christ.  When one of us stumbles, someone is there to pick us up, to encourage us, to help us get back on our feet.  If we see somebody fall, we are there to selflessly do the same.  By leaning on one another, we can cross the finish line together.

Ecclesiastes 4:10  10 For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.

1 Thessalonians 5:11  11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

August 11th Weekly E-votional

Hopefully, after Mars Hill, Art & Music Camp, and vacation, the weekly updates will actually be, you know, weekly.  If you happen to follow my personal account on Facebook, you saw the video of Hannah I posted this past week.  It was Sunday night and we turned on the Olympics as we were winding down for the evening.  Simone Biles was doing her floor routine and Hannah loved it.  She immediately began trying to mimic Simone’s routine in our living room.  She danced, tried cartwheels, and tried to follow along the best she could.  Every night since then, she has wanted to watch “flipping”.  There is no doubt she was inspired.

Hannah is not alone.  Many people are inspired during the Olympics.  Whether it is watching the almost flawless routine of the “Final Five”, seeing the United States’ dominance in the pool, or any of the incredible athletic performances in Rio this week.  We should be inspired, these athletes are inspirational.  They take a God given talent and put in hours, days, years of practice and dedication to become the best at what they do!  It makes us want to be better at whatever we do.

How is your faith inspiring?  After all, our faith is a God given gift.  With practice and devotion, our faith can grow and become stronger?  Whether it is meditation, prayer, reading scripture, singing, or any other practice, we can grow our strength.  We may not be able to swim like Katie Ledecky or be as graceful as Aly Raisman, but we can build our faith. With time, we can be someone others look to.  We can be someone who draws others to Christ.  We can be an inspiration.

Hebrews 10:24  “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
