May 25th News and Notes

Bowiefest

Bowiefest is coming up June 4th.  Sign-up sheets for helping out available in the Narthex.  The Burgess’s, who usually head this up, are unavailalbe this year, so we are still looking for a Project Lead to oversee everything.

Rechartering Sunday

Sunday, June 5th is our Rechartering Sunday.  During worship, there will be time to tell your story.  Come prepared to share a story about your faith or the church.

SMA T-Shirts

You can order an UPB vs SMA t-shirt for the rock n roll for $15.00 with the proceeds going towards finding a cure for SMA.  Please order one here or through the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

SMA Walk

Our congregation will be hosting a walk n roll to raise money for SMA on Saturday June 11th.  The walk will be one mile at 10:30 and we will have a celebration afterwards.  This is an opportunity to both commit to hands on mission and raise our viability in the neighborhood, so let’s all get involved so we can put an end to SMA!

 Mars Hill

The Mars Hill mission trip will be July 10th-16th this year.  Please let Chris know if you are interested in going bu June 12th.

May 24th Weekly E-votional

When I am asked to officiate a funeral, I always ask to meet with the family of the loved one who has past.  This is so that I can get to know the loved one through the family’s eyes.  Usually one of two things happens.  Either the family shares with me basic facts, where they worked, where they lived, etc or the family gets started telling stories.  I so much prefer that later.  Not only is it a way of providing tribute and healing, but it really helps me to see the loved one through the family’s eyes.  Stories are powerful.  Stories are important.

Stories help us to grow in relationship.  Think about that for a minute.  What would help you get to know somebody better, knowing facts about them (height, eye color, where they are from, etc.) or hearing them tell a story about when they were growing up?

Stories are also how we learn best.  Hannah loves to have us read stories to here and we love to see as she makes connections between the stories and life.  Maybe this is why Jesus taught so often through stories and they are some of the passages that are most remembered today, the story of the Good Samaritan, the story of the Prodigal Son, and so on.

Stories are powerful.  They teach us, move us, they connect us, and they inspire us.  On June 5th, we will be celebrating Rechartering Sunday and I am going to ask you to share your story.  During the service, there will be time for anyone who wants to come forward and share their story.  It can be a story of a time when their faith carried them, a story about how they came to follow Christ, or a story about a particular moving time in the church.  Come, share your story, and let it teach us, move us, connect us, and inspire us.

Let’s put a song in Pearl’s heart on Sun., May 22, at 11:30 a.m. Adults and kids are invited to join the choir when we go to Pearl Donovan’s home to sing several hymns for her.

Pearl was a faithful worshiper with us and an enthusiastic teacher of children in our church before her massive stroke. One of her favorites is, “This Little Light of Mine.”  So kids, let your lights shine and help us make music for Pearl.  Meet in the narthex at 11:15 a.m., and we’ll car pool (if you wish) to her home at 15807 Pinecroft Lane.  See Shirley Bickel for more details.
