April 28th Weekly E-votional

Christmas in April is this Saturday, starting at 8:00.  Have you ever wondered why it is called “Christmas in April”?  I was laying awake the other night and that random thought came into my head.

As you know, during Christmas in April, different churches put together teams to work on homes of people who are in need.  My first thought was we called it “Christmas in April” because it is a gift for those we are helping.  It makes sense, after all, Christmas is a time we give gifts, right?

Then I thought a little bit deeper.  I thought about what Christmas is really about.  At Christmas, we celebrate Christ’s birth.  At Christmas, we celebrate Emmanuel, God with us.  At Christmas we celebrate Christ coming into the world and being present with us.  Maybe that is why we call it “Christmas in April”.  It gives us a chance to be Christ’s presence in the world.  At Christmas we celebrate God’s love shown through Christ’s presence with us.  During Christmas in April, we are able to show God’s love to others by being Christ’s presence to them.

Christ lived a live of service.  In Matthew 20:28 he said he “came not to be served but to serve”.  As followers of Christ, we are called to do the same.  In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he writes that we are the body of Christ.  As such, we are called to continue the work of Christ.  How are you continuing the work of Christ?  How are you serving others?  How are you Christ’s presence in the world?

Matthew 25:40  “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”
