February 19th E-votional

I just finished reading an article about how “Redbox” is eventually going to die.  If you aren’t familiar, redbox is the company that has the little machines in grocery stores and 7-11s and all sorts of places that you can rent movies from.  Their sales are down and the author reasoned that they are becoming obsolete just like Blockbuster and other movie rental places went obsolete.  The trend now is to rent movies online or through the cable box.

This article made me think about how much people like to predict the “death” of things.  Various companies, movements, and technologies are often declared dead by one expert or another.  The Church is a popular target, especially with the national trends in membership.  How often have you seen a headline touting the death of mainline Christianity or the end of protestantism?

My thought is often, “so what?”  So what if the Church is dying?  Not what you expected your pastor to say, is it?  Please note that I am talking about the Church as an organization and not the United Parish of Bowie.

Isn’t one of our defining features as Christians the belief in resurrection?  Don’t we believe that death is not the end, that we go on in one form or another?  Redbox provides a good example for us here.  Blockbuster became obsolete as new technologies such as redbox and netflix came about.  Now redbox may be becoming obsolete with the ability to rent movies online.  The delivery method changes, but the end product is the same.  The Church may very well die, but Christianity, the Good News, the body of Christ will go on.  It may not look like what we think of as church now, but the Gospel will be shared.

If we worry too much about if or when the Church will die, our default setting will become preservation.  That is not what the Church should be focusing on.  Instead we should look to Jesus.  In the garden before he was arrested, he prayed ” Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.”  He did not want to face his death, but he knew if he was going to die, he would do so glorifying God!

If we are the Church as an organization is going to live, it’s main purpose should be to glorify God!  If the Church as an organization is going to die, it should follow Jesus’ example and do so, glorifying God!  This doesn’t mean that we should give up or not examine the way we do things, it means that whatever we should do, we should make sure our primary focus is on glorifying God, sharing God’s love and grace, and proclaiming the Good News!

Romans 14:8  “If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.”

February 11th Weekly E-votional

I know, I know. How can it be called a weekly e-votional when I haven’t been very good about writing weekly lately?  Between the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday, annual meetings, board meetings, officer training, and all sorts of other things, my e-votionals have just been kind of swept under the rug.  Like all habits, the longer you go without doing it, the easier it is to get out of the habit of doing it.  The opposite side of this is that the more you participate in a habit, the easier it is to keep doing it.  This is true of spiritual practices, as well.

Lent is a great time to begin a new spiritual practice.  Usually the practices associated with Lent are almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.  We usually talk about fasting, about what we are giving up.  I am giving up chocolate.  I am giving up caffeine.  I am giving up Facebook.  Please understand these are examples only, now what I, personally, am giving up!

I have long thought that it is better to add a spiritual practice than to give something up. “Give up” an half hour a day to read scripture or pray.  “Give up” a television show each evening to spend Bible study with the family.  “Give up” some money and perform a random act of kindness each day.  The pope proposed that we give up being indifferent to our neighbors.  Pastor and author Mike Slaughter said it more bluntly, “give up being a jerk”.

Whatever you do, don’t do it to become more healthy or become a better person.  If you give something up or add something, do it so that you grow closer to God.  Lent is a time of reflection, transformation, and preparation for the events of crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.  What better time to add a new spiritual practice?
